Vietnam Durian Export: Varieties, Season and International Markets
Vietnam has become one of Southeast Asia’s important durian suppliers, supported by expanding cultivation, favorable growing conditions and growing demand from international markets. Durian is now one of Vietnam’s most valuable fruit exports, with China remaining the dominant destination.
Vietnam’s durian exports reached nearly US$1.1 billion in the first six months of 2026, up 32% year on year. The main export season from the Central Highlands was still ahead at that time.
1. Main Durian Varieties from Vietnam
Ri6 Durian
Ri6 is one of Vietnam’s best-known durian varieties and is particularly popular in domestic and regional markets.
Key characteristics include:
- Yellow to deep-yellow flesh
- Creamy and relatively dry texture
- Strong but pleasant durian aroma
- Sweet flavor with moderate bitterness
- Good eating quality
- Suitable for fresh consumption and processing
Ri6 is widely cultivated in southern Vietnam and the Mekong Delta.
Monthong Durian
Monthong, also known as Dona durian in Vietnam, is one of the most important varieties for export.
Its characteristics include:
- Large fruit size
- Thick, yellow flesh
- Relatively mild aroma
- Sweet flavor
- Firm flesh
- Good transportation characteristics
- Strong demand in export markets
Monthong is particularly important for the Chinese market and is widely cultivated in Vietnam’s Central Highlands.
Other Varieties
Vietnam also produces other durian varieties, including:
- Musang King
- Black Thorn
- Dona
- Chuong Bo
- Various local durian varieties
However, Ri6 and Monthong remain among the most commercially important varieties for Vietnamese exporters.
2. Vietnam Durian Growing Regions
Vietnam’s major durian-producing regions include the Central Highlands and Mekong Delta.
Important production areas include:
- Dak Lak
- Dak Nong
- Lam Dong
- Gia Lai
- Tien Giang
- Ben Tre
- Vinh Long
- Dong Thap
The Central Highlands has become particularly important for export supply. During the main 2026 harvest season, production from this region significantly increased export availability.
The geographical distribution of production also helps Vietnam extend its export season compared with relying on a single growing region.
3. Vietnam Durian Season
Vietnam has a relatively long durian supply window because different growing regions harvest at different times.
The general commercial export window is approximately:
| Period | Supply Situation |
|---|---|
| January–March | Limited/off-season supply |
| April | Beginning/shoulder season |
| May–June | Main supply |
| July–October | Peak Central Highlands season |
| November | Late/shoulder season |
| December | Limited supply |
Vietnam’s principal export season is generally May to October, with April and November acting as shoulder months.
The Central Highlands, particularly Dak Lak and neighboring provinces, becomes especially important from around July onward.
4. Fresh Durian for Export
Fresh durian is the most important export format for Vietnamese suppliers.
Export fruit is normally selected according to:
- Variety
- Fruit maturity
- Size and weight
- Flesh quality
- Appearance
- Pest-free condition
- Residue requirements
- Growing-area registration
- Packing-house requirements
- Destination-market specifications
For major markets such as China, exporters need to work with approved growing areas and packing facilities and comply with phytosanitary requirements.
5. Frozen Durian
Vietnam also has significant potential in frozen durian, particularly for:
- Frozen whole durian
- Frozen durian pulp
- Frozen durian flesh
- Seedless durian pulp
- IQF durian products
- Durian puree
Frozen durian allows exporters to extend availability beyond the fresh harvest season and supply food manufacturers, dessert companies, bakeries and foodservice buyers.
For frozen products, maintaining the required cold chain is critical. Vietnamese industry sources note that frozen durian intended for export needs to be maintained at approximately -18°C or below throughout storage and transportation.
6. China: Vietnam’s Largest Durian Market
China is by far the most important international market for durian.
Vietnam officially gained access to the Chinese market for fresh durian in 2022 under a phytosanitary protocol. Export plantations and packing facilities must meet registration and approval requirements.
In the first half of 2026, China imported approximately US$846 million of durian from Vietnam, giving Vietnam around 18% of China’s durian import value, behind Thailand.
Vietnam’s advantages in China include:
- Geographic proximity
- Shorter transportation routes than many competing origins
- Large production base
- Increasing number of registered growing areas
- Established road and border logistics
- Ability to supply during periods when other Southeast Asian origins are between seasons
However, quality control, traceability and compliance with Chinese phytosanitary requirements remain critical.
7. Other International Markets
Although China dominates Vietnam’s durian exports, Vietnamese suppliers can also explore other markets.
Southeast Asia
Potential markets include:
- Singapore
- Malaysia
- Thailand
- Cambodia
- Laos
- Philippines
- Indonesia
These markets have established durian consumption cultures and may offer opportunities for both fresh and processed products.
East Asia
Potential markets include:
- South Korea
- Japan
- Taiwan
- Hong Kong
These markets can offer opportunities for premium-quality fruit, frozen durian and processed durian products, although import requirements and quality expectations vary.
Middle East
Potential markets include:
- United Arab Emirates
- Saudi Arabia
- Qatar
- Kuwait
- Oman
Durian can be marketed to Asian communities, specialty fruit importers, supermarkets, foodservice companies and distributors.
Europe and North America
European and North American markets are smaller than China but can provide opportunities for:
- Frozen durian
- Durian pulp
- Durian desserts
- Processed durian
- Premium fresh durian
Frozen and processed formats can be particularly useful where long-distance transportation and shelf-life requirements make fresh durian more challenging.
8. Why International Buyers Consider Vietnamese Durian
Vietnam offers several advantages to international buyers:
Competitive production costs
Vietnam has a large agricultural workforce and extensive durian-growing areas.
Geographical advantage
Vietnam is close to major Asian consumption centers, particularly China.
Long export window
Different growing regions allow Vietnam to supply durian over several months.
Multiple varieties
Buyers can source both Ri6 and Monthong as well as other specialty varieties.
Fresh and processed options
Vietnamese suppliers can provide fresh, frozen and processed durian products.
Growing export infrastructure
The country’s packing, cold-chain and export infrastructure continues to develop alongside rising international demand.
9. Quality and Export Requirements
International buyers should confirm the following before placing an order:
- Variety
- Fruit size
- Weight range
- Maturity level
- Flesh color
- Dry matter or quality specifications
- Residue requirements
- Packaging format
- Carton weight
- Number of fruits per carton
- Growing-area code
- Packing-house code
- Phytosanitary certificate
- Treatment requirements
- Temperature and cold-chain conditions
- Incoterms
- Loading port
- Required delivery schedule
For China, the growing area and packing facility are particularly important because shipments must comply with the relevant registration and phytosanitary requirements.
10. Vietnam Durian Export Packaging
Depending on the destination, fresh durian may be packed in export cartons with protective materials such as:
- Foam netting
- Protective paper
- Inner liners
- Corrugated cartons
- Plastic bags where required
- Pallets where required
The final packaging should be determined according to the buyer’s specifications and destination-country regulations.
For frozen durian, exporters normally use food-grade packaging suitable for frozen storage and refrigerated transportation.
11. Vietnam Durian Export Outlook
Vietnam’s durian industry has significant growth potential, but the market is becoming increasingly competitive.
China’s total durian imports increased strongly in the first half of 2026, while Vietnam ranked second among suppliers. At the same time, Thailand and Malaysia are expanding their exports and competing for Chinese consumers.
For Vietnamese exporters, the key priorities are therefore:
- Consistent quality
- Reliable growing-area traceability
- Approved packing facilities
- Food-safety compliance
- Proper maturity control
- Competitive pricing
- Reliable cold-chain logistics
- Long-term relationships with importers
Vietnam is particularly competitive when it can combine high-quality Monthong or Ri6, reliable supply, competitive pricing and efficient logistics.
12. Buying Vietnamese Durian
International buyers looking for Vietnamese durian can source:
Fresh Durian
- Ri6
- Monthong
- Other commercial varieties
- Different size and grade specifications
Frozen Durian
- Whole frozen durian
- Frozen pulp
- Frozen flesh
- Seedless pulp
- IQF products
Processed Durian
- Durian puree
- Durian paste
- Durian-based desserts
- Other value-added products
For a Vietnamese exporter, the best approach is to confirm the buyer’s required variety, quantity, packaging, destination, delivery schedule and quality specifications before preparing a quotation.
